The YEP Ethos

National Youth Council- Youth Expedition Project funds youth participants between 15 and 35 years old to embark on overseas Service-Learning projects as well as leaders who are keen to organise and implement YEP in ASEAN, China and India. Individuals gather and form project teams to research and champion a social issue of their interest, identify local and regional needs, and make active contributions to communities both at home and abroad at the same time learning from the experience.

Service Learning in YEP

Service-learning appears to be an approach to experiential learning, an expression of values-service to others, community development and empowerment, reciprocal learning-which determines the purpose, nature and process of social and educational exchange between learners and the people they serve, and between experiential programs and the community organizations with which they work. (Timothy Stanton, 1987)

Service + LearningYEP involves a service component and a facilitated process to meet learning goals. Emphasis is placed equally on the service and learning (Diagram C) where teams through meaningful service projects and engagement with the host community achieve community, civic and academic learning.
