About the Seminar

This seminar is the first of its kind to be inaugurated in Singapore. Through the seminar, RIEL aims to:

a) Provide teachers with the language and theoretical frameworks surrounding PBE;
b) Explore how PBE can enhance the holistic development of students;
c) Provide a platform for PBE specialists and teachers to share their experiences in the conceptualizing and conducting of PBE experiences for their students; and
d) Establish a network of local practitioners for the purpose of developing this field.

Theme of the Seminar

The theme for the seminar is "Growing Connections". As Singapore forges ahead and leverages on technological enhancements, Singaporeans are gradually joining the community of global citizens where working or living in a foreign land is the norm.

The theme is based on the notion that PBE can offer infinite stimulating learning experiences to enhance students" holistic development by directly relating school experiences to real life and re-connecting them to their community and their environment for sustainable living.

Sub-themes of the Seminar

To augment the main theme, the seminar aims to guide both the presenters and participants through discussions of the role of PBE in the following domains:

  • Community and Citizenship (Eg. Service Learning, Diversity Education, Community Involvement Project, Youth Expedition Project, National Education, etc);
  • Humanities (Eg. Arts, Geography, History, Literature, etc);
  • Sciences (Eg. Maths, Biology, Chemistry, etc);
  • Outdoor and Environmental Education (Eg. Adventure Education, Environmental Sustainability, etc); and
  • Personal Development (Eg. Social Emotional Learning, Character Development, Physical Development, Ethics, etc)

The Raffles Institute for Experiential Learning (RIEL) is part of Raffles Institution (Junior College), Singapore. RIEL was set up in 2006 to enhance student development programmes through pedagogy and capability development.

As an Institute devoted to the development of character and values, RIEL aims to contribute significantly to the development of experiential education in Singapore schools, focusing on pedagogy and programme development in the following areas:

- Community and Citizenship Education
- Diversity Education
- Outdoor and Environment Education
- Personal Development
