By Singapore Buddhist Lodge

The expedition of Project New Dawn Laos jointly organized by the Singapore Buddhist Lodge (SBL) and the NUS Buddhist Society took place from 16th to 31st of May 2008 in Muang Kham Village, Luang Prabang, Lao PDR. A total of 20 youths, excluding 2 leaders were recruited into the team, and were assigned with specific cell groups. Amongst the participants were a mixed bag of nationalities (PRC, Malaysians and Singaporeans), races and religion. The focus of the expedition was to teach the students in the village Basic English and to engage them in art and craft sessions after their lessons.
In addition, the team assisted in the construction of a cement multi-purpose court and a 12 metres long stairways leading to their school. The expedition brought along many learning points such as to not take the access to education in Singapore for granted.
The team also had an engaging local community project with Very Special Arts (VSA) and it helped them to better appreciate social issues relating to both Singapore and Laos. To each one of them, Muang Kham village and its children will not be forgotten for a long time.
