Project Pelita 08: Kampong Som (EU4RIA) took place from 23rd June to 6th July 2008 at Kampong Som, Cambodia. Their overseas host community is M’lop Tapang, a centre for the street children.
The team’s main focus was on education and enrichment programs and hence, they provided the teachers with alternative methods of conducting lessons and introduced new games and enriching activities to them. The team made use of the teaching tools and classroom facilitation that they learnt and observed when they were in schools to apply to the children in M’lop Tapang.
They faced many challenges during their expedition. One of the challenges was the last minute change in programs and the locations that the team members were designated to. The management of M’lop Tapang requested the team to teach the children at the Main Centre and 2 Slum schools rather then just the Main Centre. The team had to reallocate their materials and resources which were not sufficient. They had to come up with new activities and lessons to cope with the change.
Another challenge would be the language barrier. There were times when the team had no translator around to translate their ideas. The children and the local teachers could not understand what the team was trying to say and hence, they could not see the objectives of the activities and lessons.
Upon their return from their expedition, the team set up Eu4ria Inc where they conducted a 1-Day workshop titled “How to create your own overseas expedition” to create awareness to the youth in Singapore about the problems and issues faced by our neighboring countries.
