Project Riverkids

By Raffles Junior College

A team of 24 students and 2 staff from RJC set off to the Sa Theay community in the Ruesey Keo District in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. A pioneer batch of volunteers for Project Riverkids, the main purpose of their visit was to educate, raise awareness and interact with the local community. During their 18-day stay in November 2007, they developed a booklet on child trafficking, created educational modules (art, music and science) and organized a Family Day for the local community. The Family Day sees the children as well as their parents participating in games and cross-cultural exchange. Singaporean cusines such as laksa, chicken rice and red bean soup were prepared by the team and savoured by the community.

The Riverkids Foundation helps prevent child trafficking in Phnom Penh, Cambodia by working directly and closely with families within the urban slum communities. These children do not have the privilege of receiving proper education because their families are too poor and many spend their childhood collecting rubbish in order to earn some money for their families. The Riverkids Foundation offers these children an alternative by providing their families with social support and medical care, and also education for the children themselves.
